When you say effect, are you refering to the gradation? This was done in grayscale with the paintbrush tool (pen pressure enabled for size and flow). Other than the gradient used in the background, that's all there is to it.

Oh, so this was done with programs an' a pad of some sort? Eventually Ima have to get me something so I can get offa paper and keep up with everyone and look less a fool when I ask questions ¬.¬

Hmm, I think I'm gonna have to grab my acrylics some time so I can get in on this messy semi-abstract goodness. I can't afford a tablet+ PS but I suppose actual paint might do the trick :P.
BTW, do you use a Wacom, and what dimensions?
